Rector of Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University, Prof. Dr. Alpaslan Ceylan received and congratulated undergraduate students of the Department of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Islam Cenishbekov and Zhoomart Suranbaev, whose article on the development of artificial intelligence technologies for the Kyrgyz language was published in a Scopus-indexed journal.
The research article co-authored by the students, titled “Bridging the Gap in Less-Resourced Languages: Building a Benchmark for Kyrgyz Language Models,” examined performance evaluation processes of Large Language Models (LLMs) for low-resource languages. The study emphasized that existing multilingual evaluation systems, which are largely based on English-centered translation methods, fail to adequately reflect the cultural and linguistic characteristics of the target language.
A Significant Contribution to Kyrgyz Artificial Intelligence Studies by the Students
Within the scope of the research, “KyrgyzLLM-Bench,” the first comprehensive benchmarking platform designed for evaluating Kyrgyz-language artificial intelligence models, was developed. In addition, the researchers created “KyrgyzMMLU,” a multiple-choice benchmark based on the national curriculum of Kyrgyzstan, “KyrgyzRC,” a reading comprehension dataset, and additional test sets covering logical reasoning, mathematical problem-solving, and language understanding tasks.
The study comparatively analyzed the Kyrgyz-language performance of both open-source and commercial artificial intelligence models, and noted that the findings constitute among the first comprehensive results demonstrating model capabilities in AI research focused on the Kyrgyz language. The publicly shared datasets and evaluation infrastructure are expected to make significant contributions to future artificial intelligence studies focused on the Kyrgyz language.
Rector Ceylan Congratulated the Students on Their Achievement
During the reception, Rector Ceylan congratulated the students and stated that this academic achievement carries strategic importance both for the university’s international scientific visibility and for the representation of the Kyrgyz language in digital technologies. Prof. Dr. Ceylan also noted that the university’s rise in the QS World University Rankings is directly linked to its research capacity, scientific productivity, and vision of internationalization, emphasizing that the high-quality work produced by the students further strengthens Kyrgyz-Turkish Manas University’s global academic standing.
